Successful plan's foundations are built through community and partnership while developed through the lens of the management agency's unique and often nuanced challenges.


Professional Services

Cañon Consulting has experience in all aspects of outdoor recreation management, particularly with federal and state land management agencies. This includes development of comprehensive recreation management plans, land use plans, recreation impact analysis, trail system master plans, and business plans for fee sites. Our land manager based perspective allows us to approach projects from the agency and the public perspective. Trail and Recreation Planning

Cañon Consulting has experience in all aspects of trail system planning and development. This includes development of trail system master plans, trail design, trail construction oversight and NEPA for both non-motorized and motorized uses. Our experience allows us to integrate trail advocates desires with land management needs to provide complete trail systems that stand the test of time.


Camping Management

Camping has long been an afterthought in the management of recreation. With increased demands comes increases in impacts and a need to effectively manage camping. Cañon Consulting has experience in holistic recreation management plans that consider developed campground concept plans, dispersed camping management, monitoring protocols and business plans development to support fee sites.


River Management and Visitor Use

With increase in recreation demand, strategies to effectively provide outstanding opportunities and protect sensitive resources are increasingly needed. Cañon Consulting has experience in utilizing the Inter-Agency Visitor Use Management Council (IVUMC) framework to develop plans and monitor for success. This experience includes river systems, the epitome of recreation demand in a sensitive ecosystem.


WHO WE ARE

Kalem Lenard, the principal of Cañon Consulting, brings 20 years of his public land management real world experience to the challenges of modern-day outdoor recreation management and planning. His experience includes developing and implementing recreation management plans in response to changes in visitor use patterns with a focus on the importance of data to support decisions as well as monitoring to adaptively manage dynamic recreation environments. His work includes developing destination trail systems in response to community desires, grappling with increased visitation and poor visitor behavior at destination sites, and responding to increased impacts from dispersed camping in the arid west. He has worked in complex collaborative partnerships as well as controversial NEPA projects and land use planning processes. He shares this experience and knowledge as an instructor for recreation planning outcomes focused management framework and interagency visitor use management council.
